Bug Description

After I finished installing Ubuntu, it asks me if I want to install the proprietary driver since it detect my graphic card (mine is FireGL mobility V5700, 512 MB VRAM). I clicked yes, and then enable or activate this driver (or something like that). It seems to search for the driver (in a dialogue) but after that dialogue disappeared, the driver is still not activated (and hence, I cannot enable Compiz).

After doing all the updates (around 230 of them, just normal automatic updates that Ubuntu asks me to after installing the system), I went back to System/Admin/Hardware drivers to enable the driver. This time, I get an error message without any message. Just a blank one with an OK button.

I'm now using ATI's driver but it doesn't run very smoothly (i.e. not very fast). I hope someone can help me with this.

Thanks!
Brian

Hi briantk-1988,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

I just installed the ubuntu (jaunty) proposed ATI proprietary driver on my new w500.
It seems to work fine, but when I try to set system>preferences>display to setup a dual monitor (which works when I use the internal graphic card), the "display" toolbox do not appear correctly, and also the screen region of the menubar (on the left) is not displayed correctly (see attached screenshot).
I have to force quit the display toolbox to close it.

Can you help me?

thanks
boris

I've posted a new version of the -fglrx driver to our xorg-edgers PPA,
would you mind testing it either on Jaunty or Karmic and see if it
resolves this bug?

Get fglrx 8.620 here:

Thank you a lot Bryce, for what it concerns my problem now seems to work well on Jaunty.

Thanks; it would be nice to get feedback from briantk on this issue as well, but since there was no reply from him from the earlier request for info I guess we can close this bug now.
