Bug Description

I am using Xubuntu 9.04 Beta with latest updates.

I have no sound in this release and I did in Ubuntu and Kubuntu of the same version. My Volume control applet in the XFCE tray is greyed out and nothing will make any sound.

I am using an HP dv6543tx laptop.
This laptop has the following sound device:
Realtek High-Definition Audio (Not sure of model number)

I have attached a screenshot of what my XFCE tray looks like. (P.S. I added the red parts)

OK, here is the output of my dmesg command. I have put it in a text file because it is quite long. (60KB)

I am actually not sure what sound card I have because the HP website has drivers for Realtek HD Audio and xfce4-mixer says that I have 2,HDA Intel (ALSA) and Realtek ALC268 (OSS).

Oh, and pulseaudio is not installed and I was wondering if it is meant to be installed.

I don't know what just happened but after installing pulseaudio (no commands or reboot) my sound worked and all is fine. I've attached a bunch of screenshots of my xfce4-mixer configuration and my tray. I think after the whole time the volume was just at 0% even though in the mixer I set it to 80%. ???

There is a whole bunch of new sound devices in the list when there used to only be HDA Intel and Realtek ACL268. The new ones all have pulseaudio somewher in their name. You can see this in one of the screenshots.

Note: The media buttons like volume +/- and mute don't do anything on my laptop.

My laptop is an HP dv6543tx.

I am having the same problem with the audio, WITH pulseaudio installed.

I have tried reinstalling, and I still get the problem. I have experience this with both 32-bit and 64-bit editions. I have experienced it in beta, release candidate and final release.

my tray icon is grayed out too, but it has one blue bar in front of it after selecting a pulseaudio version of my detected sound card. I can enable the audio with the mixer, but it is muted again on restart.
