Jaunty doesn't support Intel 845

I tried upgrading from Ubuntu Studio 8.10 to Jaunty Beta, but neither gnome nor kde would start. I first tried to simply upgrade by changing from "Intrepid" to "Jaunty" in the sources list, but when that did not work I tried to install from disks. That also did not work. Both ways is failed to start x.

I don't understand that it was too little information, because the
change in xserver-xorg-video-intel corrected that problem. However,
after I successfully installed Jaunty and logged in, the use of vlc
caused x to crash. Since these things didn't happen under Intrepid but
only in Jaunty, I would not think it to be an xorg problem per se.
I really don't have time to deal with this. I simply went back to
Intrepid. I'll leave it to others to sort all this out.
