Duplicate Messages Across System

Bug Description

This seems to be common among the entire system, but I first noticed this with a mailing list.

On a mailing list, if a user is a member of two different teams and one of those teams is signed up to the others mailing list, a user will get that exact same message twice. I imagine using teams to join teams -and- sign up for the mailing list is uncommon and probably not the smartest move... but... it is being done. It would be preferable if the user were only messaged once.

I see this same behavior with bugs. If a user is getting notifications from a team that is in charge of bugs and they change one of those bugs, they will get a message about their actions twice. Once is plenty for something you're doing your self. Happens for blueprints too.

It should not be possible for a team to subscribe to a mailing list. Teams don't have active account status so even if that were possible, they should never be able to receive mailing list postings.

However, I don't quite understand the bug report. Are you saying that the duplicate message is a mailing list post from a person, or a message generated by Launchpad in response to some event?

Given that we do not send email to teams, only people, it should not be possible for duplicate email to come from a Launchpad mailing list.

I think this happens because a user will be a member of two teams and one team will be a member of the other.

I initially created this bug report because I sent a message to the ubuntumembers team. Some users got the message up to 4 times.

Are all the teams launchpad teams, and did you send the message to a team with a *launchpad hosted* list?

/me notes that ubuntu does not use launchpad's hosted mailing-lists.

The other teams are launchpad teams. I believe the other teams do not have a mailing list either.

Thanks for that information. This is a known issue. We decided was we need to honour the intent of the team. The team has setup a contact address, and we will not undermine them. There is also a lot of complexity in calculating what is the right origin for each person's email (because the headers and footers are different)

I recommend setting up a filter on the to remove duplicate message ids.
