Bug Description

Laptop: Compaq Presario 2150
AMD Athlon-XP 512 Mb of RAM
Lucent Wireless Orinoco Classic Gold PCMCIA card.
Linux ubuntu 2.6.15-18-386 #1 PREEMPT Thu Mar 9 14:41:49 UTC 2006 i686 GNU/Linux
Dapper 5

This could also fall on the pcmcia package. The Orinoco Card has to be inserted twice to be detected. Upon detection two devices are created: wifi0 and wlan0. Wifi0 detects the wrong MAC address. The only way to get the card working is to delete any reference in /etc/network/interfaces and reboot the computer. The wlan0 interface can then be brought up with the "iwconfig wlan0 essid any" command and ten dhclient wlan0. It reports the MAC of the Access Point incorrectly.
Syslog then starts recording:
Mar 14 20:42:40 localhost kernel: [4300370.981000] wifi0_ifrename: hfa384x_get_rid - RID len mismatch: rid=0xfd51, len=2 (expected 6)
Mar 14 20:42:42 localhost kernel: [4300372.981000] wifi0_ifrename: hfa384x_get_rid - RID len mismatch: rid=0xfd51, len=2 (expected 6)

This problem looks like the one where both the hostap and regular orinocco modules are loaded for the card.

I fixed this on my laptop by blacklisting hostap, and I know the upstream kernel incorporated a fix for this (making hostap not declare that it can drive the card). Has this fix gone into the ubuntu kernel?

Ok, if you send me the output of "lspci -vv" and "lspci -vvn", I can make sure the hostap driver has this device removed from it's supported list. Please attach to bug report (do no paste in comments).

Thanks

I've attached the info to the bug report - hopefully I've done it correctly
for this was my first bug report.

Thanks

I have this problem (loading both orinoco and hostap) too. How do you blacklist a module?

This bug has had no activity for a considerable period.
Can someone confirm that adding hostap to /etc/modules.d/blacklist fixes this problem.

Can anyone also comment on this issue against later releases. (Report from duplicate indicates issue for 7.04 & 7.10)
Thanks.

The 18 month support period for Feisty Fawn 7.04 has reached it's end of life - http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-7.04-end-of-life . As a result we are closing the linux-source-2.6.20 task. Additionally against 2.6.15 and 2.6.22 this will be closed as it does not qualify for a Stable Release Update - http://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates.

As Gareth requested previously, if you can please confirm if this is still an issue with the most recent Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release that would be great. Thanks.

*This is an automated response*

This bug report is being closed because we received no response to the previous request for information. Please reopen this if it is still an issue in the actively developed pre-release of Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 - http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/jaunty . To reopen the bug report simply change the Status of the "linux" task back to "New".

I have this problem on jaunty, but did not have it on 8.04 or 8.10.
