change resolution - gnome-panel weirdness

I one tries to change the screen resolution via System->Preferences->Screen Resolution, from 1024x768 to 800x600 and back to 1024x768, the items in the upper gnome-panel get moved to the right, as if they were moved to make them visible at 800x600, but they don't recover the original position when back to 1024x768
