Bug Description

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Using current (26.03.2009) Ubuntu 9.04 beta and
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller
sound device.

Just about any sound program (firefix with flash, mplayer, xmms etc) hangs pulseaudio within 10 seconds. In 8.04 it took few minutes. After that you can't start any programs that produce sounds.

In 8.04 you could easily get rid of the problem by 'killall pulseaudio'. In 9.04 that no longer works, and you have to restart session or reboot.

There is absolutely no problem with alsa. Why on earth is this pulseaudio nonsense forced upon us, as it clearly has no hope of working and hardly ever will? I'm rather skeptical that there exists any test setup where pulseaudio fully works, but if there is, pulseaudio should still be opt-in, since the touted benefits are rather miniscule.

Even though the symptoms may seem different to the bugs mentioned in https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-team/2009-March/005090.html, you're really seeing a linux bug. Tim has already pulled my fixes, and they are queued for the next linux upload.
