Myth backend configure does not display correctly first time

Bug Description
Installing Mythbuntu 9.04 alpha 6.1 from live CD, AMD image, onto ASUS M3N78-EM board, using HDMI out to TV. Run installer, use either default video driver or NDVIDIA driver (both ways have this problem). OK until it finishes and wants to configure the backend for the first time. The backend configure screens all display as gray boxes with no visible text. Navigation (enter, tab) works but only changes the appearance of the boxes -- no text shown. ESC gets out and back to Live CD if running. System crashes on reboot.
This board has NVIDIA 8300 built-in, runs fine as far as the display goes under 8.10 (which I'm going back to for now).
