The version of nfs-common in Ubuntu 8.10 did not include /etc/gssapi_mech.conf; this file has not been shipped in nfs-common since Ubuntu 6.06. This should have been documented as a Replaces: on libgssglue1, but there's no supported upgrade path where this should ever have been a problem either. I'm therefore closing this report.
