Bug Description

Rationale:
current version FTBFS, new version fixes gcc-4 bug(s).

Tested on i386, and I'd highly appreciate if s.o. could test-build this on amd64.

hrm, somehow the changelog is terribly big (according to diffstat) and the changelog file itself hardly readable.

The changelog is not in the current package, only in the proposed one, thus the size in diffstat.
Librarian/LP somehow set's the type to text/html for my attached changelog, which makes it almost unreadable. (DL it and view in editor).

Looks fine to me... many many many bugfixes, most of the code changes seem pretty small and focused and current version FTBFS... let's update this
