Please download http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh and run it in a terminal with the folowing command: "bash ./alsa-info.sh" and report back with the URL you are given.

If you are not running Ubuntu Jaunty, could you perhaps try the latest Jaunty beta CD, http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releaes/jaunty?

Thanks

Same problem on Jaunty on Acer 5520 laptop. At first it was a random failure but since the latest update I did (sorry, not sure exactly what version broke it) all I can hear is static. OSS works properly.

Good morning.

I've solved this issue by installing Alsa Driver v. 1.0.20

ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/driver/alsa-driver-1.0.20.tar.bz2

Works perfectly.
