Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

After configuring Ubuntu to use both of my monitors, I am asked to log out. When I log out, I get just a brown gradient (default background) and the mouse on *both* screens. Though I'm never presented with a login prompt, I can type in my username and password. If I do so, it clearly goes through some portion of the login process as the background changes slightly. After a few (20?) seconds, both monitors just display white with some random blue lines. Then I have to reboot into recovery mode and rebuild xserve in order to get back to where I started.

Thank you for reporting this bug and helping making Ubuntu better. I have a few questions for you regarding this bug.

1. Is this still an issue in Jaunty? (the latest alpha LiveCD can be downloaded from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/9.04/)
2. What do you mean when you say you have to "rebuild xserve" in order to get back where you started?
3. When the white with the random blue lines appear, how is the responsiveness of the computer? More specifically, (i) does CapsLock turn on and off the correspondig light? (ii) Does anything happen when you press Ctrl+Alt+F2? (iii) Are you able to SSH into the computer from another computer (if you have a network and another computer available)?
4. By configuring Ubuntu to use both monitors, what tool do you use? Did you configure them to be displayed side-by-side or in cloned mode?
5. When you reported this bug (using the apport tool), what was the state of the system? Did you make any more changes to be able to report the bug (since it wouldn't have been possible from the white screen, and the logs seem to indicate that both monitors are connected)?

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.
