Bug Description

Network monitor provides a quick indication of the current network status and allows access to further settings. At the right hand of the main icon is now a horizontal signal bar twice the length of the main icon:

  http://www.paul.sladen.org/ubuntu/bugs/g-a-network-monitor.png

This takes up an aweful lot of room and is much more space wasting than the pervious 4-step vertical indication.

Ideally this should be make vertical again as the actualy bar provides no clickable-target or other auxillary facility.

After todays update the signal bar is now vertical but is still really spaced out to the right. Perhaps it could be moved in a bit? Good art though even if i think the bar is a little too wide now too at 1024x768. -mf

This issue is still present on Flight 7. Also, the wireless gauge could be much slimmer, similar to the one in Breezy.

I don't think the wireless gauge necessarily has to slimmer, but getting rid of all the blank space on both sides of it would certainly be nice.

There are some fixed icons here:

All of the whitespace in the network bar has been cropped, and the tangerine network icon is used in place of the dapper default.

Today the network connection icons changed (they are a lot better!) but the wireless status icon still use way to much space.

Sorry, I don't think the last change was to the better. It wasn't the two-screens in the icon that was the problem, the previous looked better. And they're jumping up and down now, which I find a bit disturbing.

Why not use the icon from John Simpkins? It think that one's fine.

The icons are too abstract in my opinion. It's just a progress bar and could represent anything. There's no visual indication that it represents the signal strength of the wireless connection. There should be an antenna or something similar included.

The original nm-signal-XX icons could besides fill the gap for gnome-netstatus-XX-XX in the tango theme. Am I wrong? May I reopen this?
