Postinst and postrm fail to complete leaving dpkg in a broken state

Bug Description
When installing mozilla-imagezoom, the postinst script fails with the following message:
Setting up mozilla-imagezoom (0.2.2-2) ...
Updating mozilla-thunderbird chrome registry...find: /usr/lib/
mv: accessing `/var/lib/
dpkg: error processing mozilla-imagezoom (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
mozilla-imagezoom
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
Similarly when removing it using apt-get remove mozilla-imagezoom, the process fails with the following error :
Removing mozilla-imagezoom ...

To find out which package supplied this symlink, I tried the follwing: mozilla- thunderbird/ extensions/ installed- extensions. txt mozilla- thunderbird/ extensions/ installed- extensions. txt not found.
dpkg-query -S /var/lib/
whch returned:
