Binary package hint: notify-osd

It does fade, it just does so rather quickly, so as to not obscure what you are trying to mouse over. Perhaps it should fade slower?

Are you sure it fades? It's really not viewable here. Have you got the
compiz fade plugin enabled?

You are correct Nicolò, it only fades when the compiz fade plugin is
enabled, although this is default as far as I am aware, on compiz
installs. Perhaps this bug should be specified to metacity; is that
what you are using?

No. I've had a discussion about the fade plugin with Mirco Muller. The
fade plugin is disabled in a standard install because it causes
flickers with notify-osd

The bubble is meant to instantly switch to "very transparent" on mouse-over. That's part of the spec. You're meant to be able to better look through a bubble on mouse-over, thus you see more clearly what's below it. For referece see the corresponding part of the spec https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NotifyOSD#Interaction

Ok. It's not good looking but I see the point. Bye

Our initial decision was to fade out the bubble instantly. After reviewing, gathering feedback and testing the suggestion is to keep the fade in place. The spec will be updated accordingly soon.

Thank you for this review.
So now it will be instant transparency + blur when the cursor goes to
the bubble, and fade in when the cursor leaves. right?

Update - this won't be fixed for Jaunty (not enough time), but we'll factor that in for future development.

The transition will (probably) be: quick fadeout when cursor hovers over and quick fade in when the cursor moves outside.
We're also considering to begin the fade in *before* the cursor hits the bubble area (proximity dependent), but this hasn't been tested yet.

I am not sure where the information of fade being disabled by default on a standard install is coming from, as it was enabled for me in Jaunty alpha 5 and has been for multiple releases IIRC.

In notify-osd trunk proximity-fade has been implemented (http://bazaar.launchpad.net/%7Enotify-osd-developers/notify-osd/main/revision/327) as part of the feature-list for the karmic cycle.
