As in topic, playing a movie in fullscreen works on jaunty, but if some notification is displayed or progress bar is shown (when moving mouse, for example) wallpaper briefly shows, then disappears.

Ok, it looks like it's compiz related. Everything works great with desktop effects turned off.

Problem disappears if desktop effects deactivated
Problem disappears if "Undirect Fullscreen Windows" deactivated in Compiz.

it seems to be a bug with notify-osd as the problem seems to be there only when the new notifications are displayed when any program runs in fullscreen mode.

After further investigation I am certain this is a compiz-bug and not notify-osd's fault. The same background "flashing through" happens for the screensaver-unlock dialog popping up as well, which is totally unrelated to notify-osd. This shows the exact same behaviour of the fullscreen window covering the whole desktop and briefly disappearing and reappearing again.

This is a compiz bug that is (hopefully) being addressed. Not really a usability fix.

This is fixed in karmic. We've turned Unredirect Fullscreen Windows off.
