No irda on Compal CL56 laptop

The irda device on my Compal CL56 laptop is not working without manual configuration. It can be made to work as follows:

$ sudo modprobe irda
$ sudo modprobe irtty_sir
$ sudo apt-get install irda-utils
$ sudo irattach /dev/ttyS0

After a reboot (don't know why that is required) my infrared phone now shows up in /proc/net/irda/discovery:

$ cat /proc/net/irda/discovery
 IrLMP: Discovery log:

 nickname: SIEMENS S55, hint: 0xb124, saddr: 0x7ca35c24, daddr: 0x0000001d

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately I don't have this laptop anymore so I can not test if this is still an issue. Maybe there is somebody else subscribed to this bug who is still using a Compal CL56 laptop who can test this?
