Can someone run the bluetoothd deamon in debug mode and post the result
$ sudo pkill bluetoothd
$ sudo /usr/sbin/bluetoothd -d -n

The machine in question that I was experiencing this on is now running Lucid, and the problem appears to have been resolved at some point. The bluetooth drivers in Lucid work fine on this box.
