[Dapper] Cairo and ATI RENDER extension cause scrambled buttons in UbuntuLooks

Bug Description

Video corruption is being observed in the UbuntuLooks theme which uses Cairo, on ATI video cards.

Certain types of buttons render incorrectly with the new ”Human“ theme. I cannot reproduce this with other themes.

It seems like only buttons with "text beside icon" are affected. Those with text below icon aren't.

Moving the mouse across the button (thus highlighting it) will remove the mess. Forcing a redraw (such as minimizing and restoring the window) has a certain chance of recreating the mess.

The bug does not occur in Xnest or with the vesa driver. It does with “radeon” and “ati” (which seem to be the same thing). Even though it might be a driver issue, I'm reporting this on ubuntulooks because I have not seen any such thing before with my video card.

[Fixed in current Ubuntu, but backport of the fix is needed for Dapper]

This screenshot displays synaptic with the glitch located in the lower left corner on the horizontal scroll bar. They are light colored horizontal streaks on the empty bar area.

The messed up buttons also happen with Firefox where the buttons don't have text on them. It's also shown up in other programs, like Evolution.

Ubuntulooks is version 0.9.6-1.

I can't see what GDM should have to do with this. Anyway, I just tried it, even booting from scratch and never invoking GDM, and the bug's still there. Probably you didn't load your full session. When gnome-settings-daemon isn't running, the default GTK theme is applied, and that doesn't seem to trigger any Render bugs.

I suppose we should relocate this to xorg-driver-ati or something.

Yesterday i have upgraded to Dapper Beta and I am experiencing similar problem with the buttons. My card is Radeon 9100. I am using `radeon' driver.

With RenderAccel turned off everything looks great (but the desktop renders slowly).

With XAA render acceleration there are some annoying artifacts.

But with the EXA acceleration the corruption is so heavy that GUI becomes almost unusable.

All other installed themes are working well (they probably dont you cairo) but are no match to Human with attractiveness :-( .

http://www.gel.ulaval.ca/~clemen00/tmp/34435-garbled-scrollbar.png

The artifacts disappear after hovering the mouse pointer above the offending widgets (in my case, buttons and scrollbars).

It's even worse when using EXA acceleration :
http://www.gel.ulaval.ca/~clemen00/tmp/34435-EXA.png

Note in the last screenshot that the "shiny" effects on the buttons and the progressbars are missing. Hovering the mouse over the widgets doesn't change anything.

Disabling RenderAccel fixes the issue completely, at the expense of slow rendering. It only occurs with the ubuntulooks theme coming with Dapper.

This is a deep upstream issue that requires knowledge of the ATI driver
and Cairo, and their interaction. I believe it has been reported
upstream (see the bugwatch on
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5518 on the report) but
there's not a lot of action there.

In Edgy, with newer drivers AND a newer Cairo, this problem is still
evident. Perhaps someone who is subscribed here know who to nudge
upstream to look at this?

To be honest I'd pull all the stable branch changes into dapper,
they've been extensively tested in other distros, also a bug to fix
some m6/m7 stability issues is currently due to be dropped in, I
suspect many other bug reports cover this problem....

anyway my unofficial package referenced earlier will fix it for dapper
users who want it..

They're welcome in the official dapper-backports repository, which provides
aggressive package updates for users who prefer faster updates to stability.
They'll be considered for a more mainstream update after more extensive

without the gradientTransform the display is just like in inkscape, but
obviously it's not the correct dislay.

I bet it is, I just closed this for xserver-xorg-driver-ati which was renamed to -video-ati for edgy.

You could follow the SRU procedure to get the fix in dapper
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates

of if SRU is not the way to go, a backport might be better:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports

That would mean getting 6.6.3 in dapper.

Timo - thanks for the links. I'm sorry about the tone in my last update post - I saw that the status for Dapper was still unconfirmed so I wanted to make sure it was properly labeled.

I'll see what I can do on both the backport and SRU fronts.

I have filed Bug #91189 to request a backport of Feisty's 6.6.3 driver to Dapper.

We generally don't do SRUs for cosmetic problems such as this one; it's not
worth the risk of changing such a critical component as a video driver.
Some guidelines for determining whether a bug should be considered for an
SRU are included in the wiki documentation.

This would be a better option.

This is almost certainly a server bug, not a Cairo bug (per se). So
if any reporters can still reproduce this, the relevant information
is:

 - What version of the X server
 - What driver
 - What driver version
 - Any driver options? (For example, is EXA enabled instead of
   XAA)

As a data point, the test case works fine for me with git Xorg as
of 2008-04-01, with the patches from bug 15333 and bug 15345 applied
on an ATI rv350 using EXA.

(From the age of the bug I suspect that those EXA-specific patches
aren't relevant to the original bug report, though they do cause misrendering of
cairo gradients.)
