thank you for reporting this issue.
do you get any other warnings/errors when running evince under xfce?
the warning you are mentioning is completely normal, evince is looking for the gnome settings daemon, but should continue loading without a problem if it doesn't find it (i.e. in other desktop environments, such as XFCE or KDE)...
what i'm saying is, if you do have an issue, it's unrelated to the attached warning...

the warning seems to indicate that dbus is not running correctly, do you get the issue by using "dbus-launch evince"?

The behaviour WAS, that opening any pdf took several minutes when it opened at all, while everything else was working completely normal.

The issue is gone.
I did nothing to fix it. At least not on purpose.
"dbus-launch evince" works fine too.
The warning remains.

the bug can probably be closed or set to invalid.
