Plasma crashes due to screen size settings?

Bug Description

I have been monitoring reproducable crashes on startup of plasma in the Ubuntu 4.2.1 Jaunty debs...

Setting: HP laptop often connected to a 1920x1200 screen at work. I have no special plasmoids installed, and only typically move the sidebar to the top, and make it fit the wide screen external monitor.

Workaround:
$ cd ~/.kde/share/config
$ rm plasma*
$ touch plasmarc

(That last actually is needed to still make it crash on a file not found, it seems)

Attached:
output on plasma startup

In debugging I just deleted the faulty config files, but will attach those shortly.

ummm... that part 2/2 is the plasmarc, not plasma-appletsrc...

I will later explore which change to the plasma settings is causing the crash... but need to figure out first how I can restart Plasma without rebooting the whole desktop, while making sure the settings are saved nevertheless...

Killing the plasma app looses the setting changes it seems... (which is logical if the settings are only saved upon plasma closing...)

Any suggestion on how to close plasma with saving settings?

I have been repeatedly changing settings one by one to the one that crashes, with restarting plasma after each single step...

no crash so far... I've made backups of a few settings, and will use that for 'diff' when my desktop crashes again, typically on rebooting the KDE desktop...
