No packages with the requested plugins found: VCD protocol source

Binary package hint: totem-gstreamer

Before all information, I have to add this: don't tell me that this is "Invalid". The same bug under Totem (Bug #129925) is marked "invalid" since developer Sebastien Bacher said that this is a gstreamer issue. And when I file this bug under gstreamer, launchpad just told me that gstreamer is not a project (even if I can select it in list). I marked this under totem-gstreamer and it came to totem anyway.

This is so confusing.

1) I am using Ubuntu 9.04 Alpha 5. I have the same problem with Ubuntu 6.06, 6.10, 7.04, 7.10, 8.04 and 8.10.

2) I am using gstreamer0.10 with totem-gstreamer (version 2.25.92-0ubuntu1).

3) I put a VCD in DVD-RW. I open Totem to play it. Totem pop up as expected. It then prompted me: "Search for suitable plugin?" I pressed "Search" of course. I expected the most obvious result: after some kind of search process, it install a suitable plugin and play.

4) Here is the tricky part. After I clicked "Search" button, an "Install Multimedia Plugins" window pop up. And it go on with some kind of search process. After all these thing, it just show me the message "No packages with the requested plugins found - The requested plugins are: VCD protocol source".

I then used terminal to start totem, then I redo the whole process. Here is the stderr output:

I also attached the strace output of the same process.

If I understand it correctly, most VCD are just MPEG video. I think gstreamer-ffmpeg is perfectly capable to play it. However, gstreamer / Totem seems to think "VCD" as something else. This is a really stupid thing if Ubuntu does not play a VCD.
