Bug Description

I am sure that this is a genneral problem in Linux, but since I use Ubuntu, and don't know where the error lies, I will put the report here. Some SonyEricsson Phones have problems with the mass storage on Linux, wich I find strange, since I would guess that all of them worked the same way.

I have tried with 4 different phones. W595 (Doesn't work), W760i (Doesn't work), W380i (Works fine), 910i (Works fine).

The two of the phones that does not work, gives me this message with the dmesg command.

repeated lines of:

[ xxxx.xxxxxx ] sd 3:0:0:0: [sdb] Sense Key : No Sense [Current]
[ xxxx.xxxxxx ] sd 3:0:0:0: [sdb] Add. Sense: No additional sense information
[ xxxx.xxxxxx ] sd 3:0:0:1: [sdc] Sense Key : No Sense [Current]
[ xxxx.xxxxxx ] sd 3:0:0:1: [sdc] Add. Sense: No additional sense information

This is not just Ubuntu 8.10, but 8.04 as well...

Hi dk_zero-cool,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid.

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 340223

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Jeremy.

Currently I am running Ubuntu 9.10 on my machines, so I tried with one of them first before starting downloading 10.04. I used a SonyEricsson module W595 which was one of the modules I tried last time when I reported this. It works fine now with Ubuntu 9.10. Nautilus creates two devices, my phone and my memory card when plugging in. It uses "gphoto2://" to access the devices (gphoto2://[usb:001,010]/store_00020001). Transfers, deletion, renaming etc. of files works without problems.

I do however get an error report on the camara.

"Error Initializing camera: -60: Could not lock the device."

But I don't know what that should be used for anyway, so I don't see that as a problem.

I don't know if this helps, or if you would still like to get the debug information?
If you also would like me to test this in the upcoming release, let me know. But I think that if it works in the current release, it properly also works in the upcoming.

About the latest upstream kernel test, I will not be able to help. I'm a web programmer, not a system programmer or whatever it is called. I am able to compile a lot of different things like programs, drivers etc. But bigger things like the kernel itself, not so much luck there. If I ever should be lucky enough to complete the compiling, I would properly crash the system to the point of no return after worth :)

Hi!

I am having a peculiar problem on connecting my SonyEricsson W595 on my Ubuntu 9.10. When connecting the mobile, Ubuntu behaves similar to how dk_zero-cool describes, making two volumes. Except one thing: The two volumes behaves like two volumes, except that my Ubuntu believes that the memory used and the memory left on the memory card is the same as the memory used and the memory left on the phone. So, weird enough: I can access two volumes, with different content, but always with the same amount of memory used and memory unused. Thus, I cannot load more content to the the 2 GB memory than what is left on the much smaller phone memory!

I'd be happy to provide you with more technical information, if you need, but please instruct me on what commands to write -- I am an amateur on computing.

best,
Lars

Hi again!

Just some additional information: I also tried this on my other Ubuntu computer, an Asus eee, running the notebook version of Ubuntu 9.10. This is a much "cleaner install", where I have done little (my other computer has lots of stuff added, including a full version of Kubuntu). But the error is exactly the same on my Asus. Just for your information, here is a screen-shoot of the two volumes:
