Bug Description

[Opening this bug on the behalf of a customer. Bug created as a place for Linuxant, Dell and Ubuntu representatives to to communicate in an attempt to diagnose the issue of why the alsa-driver-linuxant module does not work in 2.6.27-11-generic.]

Hardware: Dell 1420 (supported/certified)
Distro: Ubuntu 8.10 (8.04 - Dell image upgraded to 8.10)
alsa-driver-linuxant 1.0.18.0

Sound works when using the 2.6.27-9-generic kernel, the microphones do NOT work. I have an external hardware modem that did work when I tested it, covering that need. The missing audio input and the need to run the older kernel are troubling. I would like to have a working sound system using supported hardware drivers and hardware. Currently -9- continues to provide working audio output while -11- does not.

The Dell hardware support have been less than helpful, blaming software issues they don't handle. I am quite sure that I understood the representative to tell me I needed to reformat and reinstall Dell's 7.04 ISO, which I rejected. He would not allow the 8.04 version or 8.10. Whether that reflects actual current Dell position is not clear. That was his unyielding position. The hsf driver that had been working under 7.10 would not work and he said so. At the time, Linuxant was the only driver I found.

Hi,

both the sound and modem problems seem to be directly related to the HDA bus provided by the ALSA project, since it's not our code, we are limited in what we can do. Hopefully, the ALSA project developers will add better support for your hardware in the near future and we will eventually pick up that code for alsa-driver-linuxant.

The only thing I can tell you right now, would be to remove the 'hsfmodem' and 'alsa-driver-linuxant' packages from your system and reboot.
