Bug Description

Installed from Dapper Flight 4 LiveCD (fully updated), and Stellarium is displaying garbled text output, which makes it impossible to use.

Some screenshots follow.

This is the starting screen, already looking weird. The little backward arrows there should show actual textual output of the loading process (they keep changing glyphs).

Here you can see the weirdness in full action. Strangest thing is that the glyphs change randomly. For example, if you move the view, the glyphs change too.

Could it be related to locale settings?

Still happening on latest update (0.7.1-1ubuntu3).

I'm on nvidia drivers (geforce2 mx400), running xgl.

I am unable to reporoduce this. I install stellarium 0.7.1-1ubuntu3 and all the text is fine. I'm guessing this is a locale problem since my locale is en_US . Can you try running stellarium as "LC_ALL=en_US stellarium" ?

I tried it, didn't work.

Hmm, I just discovered that this only happens when using Xgl ! Using standard Xorg, the issue is gone.

Don't know if you intend on fixing it for Xgl, tho.

Does this bug still occur with dapper?

This still occurs here, using Dapper 6.06 and the Xgl server available from the repositories.

I have no clue why Xgl is not rendering the fonts correctly. What library does Stellarium uses to print the glyphs? Is there any other app I could test to see if the same issue occurs?

This still occurs in Feisty, user Euphro and I see it as well. I have a Matrox G550.

See this forum entry for more info: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-210875.html
Also, see this HOWTO to avoid the problem: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=51486

(It comes down to a conflict over GL hardware, and it impacts more than just Stellarium.)

Is this symptom still reproducible in current 8.04 or 8.10 alpha?
