Bug Description

Ubuntu 9.04 - kernel 2.6.28-8.8

EDIT: Still not working in kernel 2.6.28.11.14

When I connect my new MP5-player to USB, it is not found. lsusb can't see it. dmesg show some errors and try to re-connect (see dmesg snippet) but no luck.

But then - If I attach it to my Win XP computer, where it is found, and then back to the Ubuntu computer, then it is now found and auto-mount without problems! But if I turn off the player and connect one more time, then again Ubuntu can not see it.

After being connectet to windows, lsusb say:

For what it's worth, I'm seeing this problem with an MP4 player device with the same same 0525:a4a5 device ID in fedora with kernel 2.6.27.19-170.2.35.fc10.i686 and also on a different machine with kernel 2.6.27.19-78.2.30.fc9.i686.

It appears to me from watching the screen on the player that player's firmware is crashing when usb-storage does the device scan.

I have the same device and the syndrome matches what Wesley described. I can confirm that it affects Ubuntu 9.10 and Fedora 11 too.

Hi Thomas,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 339838

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
