Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

I like the desktop effects stuff very much, but the speeds for many things are too slow and should be tweaked.

Studies show that 100ms is considered imperceptible. I believe therefore, that when super-tab to a new window, it should zoom it in in less than 100ms. When I switch between windows, it should bring the new one forward in less than 100 ms. When the windows wobble after I drop it, it should wobble for less than 100ms, etc.

By using this guideline everywhere, it will look cool, but not be annoying.

I've tweaked the various values on my computer and like it very much, and I believe they should be the default.

Computers are not supposed to slow us down, and these desktop effects are supposed to be cool and are, but are also not to slow us down.

Our close animation is set to 150ms and our open one is set to 250ms but if you slow these down you can't even tell there was an animation. For the rest of the plugins they either already use 100ms or changing them to 100ms makes me sick to my stomach even looking at them one or two times.

100ms is only 3 frames of animation, it is almost impossible to show anything other than a fade correctly in 3 frames.

Err, I meant speed them up, of course.

What about the speed for the windows key - tab animations? All those animations appear to take almost one second. Did you look at those?

In addition, I think you've been using it for long enough you are conditioned to the slow experience. It might take you a few days to get used to the fast speeds.

Because of my hardware, it has been something I've only recently been able to try out, and so I notice the lag. Or maybe you spend all your time in Firefox and this slow launchpad ;-) and so don't mess with windows as much as I do. I hate waiting on my computer, and think it is morally wrong for devices that are meant to serve us to intentionally slow us down. I'll bet the number of people have asked for 250 ms lag when *Compiz is turned off* is very small.

As for only being able to do frames in 33ms, can that value be improved? A video game can do much more complicated modeling and graphical work in 10-20 ms. Maybe if you can increase the frame rate, it will seem more polished. Perhaps that should be done independent of this. Is the 33ms hard-coded somewhere? But even so, whether 3 or 10 frames, it is meant to be subtle. A number of the animations fiddle with the transparency as well which seems to imply that if you miss it, it doesn't matter -- which is true.

Anyway, as long as people are aware and work to minimize the delays, I'll consider that progress. Thanks for your time.
