Ubuntu 9.04 with latest updates available to this time:
There is bad number of steps in brightness OSD on Dell Studio 1535 laptop. Laptop has 15 steps, OSD has over 80 and steps increases/decreases exponentially as brightness up/down key is pressed.

This is rather a bug in gnome-power-manager and the patch for it to correctly use notifications, than notify-osd itself. The problem is that the number of supported brightness-levels is different from device to device. That number of supported brightness levels is currently not taken into account by gnome-power-manager (the patch to it) in order to normalize the value passed to notify-osd.
