cannot login as root in install CD

Bug Description

This issue will only be faced by those who drop out of screen for some reason during the install, and are presented with the login prompt.

'root' and empty password does not work.

Original /etc/shadow on CD has:
root::14309:::::: <-login does not work

I changed to
root:NP:14309:::::: <-login still does not work

Also
root:*NP*:14309:::::: <-login still does not work

The root line in /etc/passwd is
root:x:0:0:Super-User:/root:/bin/bash

Any ideas on why login fails?

One workaround is to replace NP with a known hash for no password.

This is not faced after the install, since entering an empty password during the install generates the hash for empty password and adds it to /etc/shadow.
