this is likely a driver bug. I think we talked about this during last desktop team meeting. Unfortunately, I cannot find the dupe right now.

Anyway, would be good to have your lspci -v output as well as your Xorg.0.log

Also consider to check whether things improve with EXA.

affects: firefox-3.5 (Ubuntu) → xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu)

Hi thibaut-bethune,

Thanks for including an image to demonstrate the issue. Could you also please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log or Xorg.0.log.old file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

With default settings (EXA) : no problems
With UXA enabled : problems are there

Forwarding this bug from a Ubuntu reporter:
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/338259

[Problem]
With Jaunty Ubuntu and "Shiretoko" Firefox, I get a black rectangle overlapping the text at certain websites when zooming in or out. This behavior is seen with UXA but not EXA.

[Discussion]
I'm running Jaunty with metacity composited
INTEL GMA 950 with UXA

With -intel 2.6.3 and the Jaunty kernel, the problems were more prevalent on a wide variety of websites, and quite bad.

For this bug report, the following was tested:
Linux 2.6.29.1 from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/
xf86-video-intel 2.7.99.1 from https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa

With Jaunty and Firefox 3.0.6 everything is fine.
Shiretoko also renders properly when using EXA.

Some websites where the problem has exhibited itself:

http://blogs.gnome.org/hughsie/2009/03/05/application-installing/ - shows a black area (see Capture1.png)

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13924_3-10204911-64.html?tag=newsEditorsPicksArea.0 - shows grey background (see Capture2.png)

I had similar problem as described here. I have intel gma950 with UXA. In my case everything worked O.K after I booted my PC but after a few hours or so, Shiretoko would start to render pages in some weird way. The text would become unreadable in some characters, and by doing zoom-in or zoom-out of the text, one characters would be render fine, while others would become weird. What I discovered after 2 or 3 weeks is that the problem is in compiz. Because the problem with the text rendering would appear after compiz eats a lot of system memory and start to use the swap file. Following the bug reports about comiz and this memory leak, I found a simple solution. The memory leak would disappear if I restart compiz and set it to use indirect rendering option. I am not sure how it should be probably done, but this is what I did. I edited file /usr/bin/compiz (it is a script file). So:

1. Press ALT+F2 and type:
gksudo gedit /usr/bin/compiz

2. At line 74 (or round 74) I edited the line :

COMPIZ_OPTIONS="--ignore-desktop-hints --replace"
and changed it into:
COMPIZ_OPTIONS="--replace --sm-disable --ignore-desktop-hints ccp --indirect-rendering"

After this there was no compiz memory leak and no text rendering problems in Shiretoko. The compiz bug report mentions that with "indirect rendering" enabled, there is another problem, like a bug in rendering transparent windows, but that bug does not appear at my system. All this is done in combination with
xf86-video-intel 2.7.99.1+git2009 from https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa and all the other updates from that repository (mesa, dri2 etc.) and also kernel 2.6.30.

We've seen problems like this with older kernels. Have you tried a more recent kernel version to see if the problem is fixed? It very well may be.

> Do you still think it's a bug for xserver-xorg-video-intel regarding Oliver comment, and why Firefox 3.0 is bug−free ?

Yes, my guess is Oliver is having an unrelated bug that just happens to have similar symptoms, although since he didn't provide any data about his system it's impossible to say. We're only going to focus on Intel graphics with this bug report.

i still have problems with latest software
For instance http://blogs.gnome.org/hughsie/2009/03/05/application-installing/ is ok at default zoom
Zoom in/out : see surroundings vertical or horizontal black lines
Zoom out a lot : see the black rectangle (interesting behavior maybe : if you refresh the page, black rectangle almost disappear. Launch any application window above Firefox GUI : black rectangle is back)
Same thing at http://www.think-underground.com/post/2009/03/08/Riposte-graduee-:-de-faux-arguments
As far as i remember, this bug is less annoying than before though

Configuration :
ASRock Conroe 1333 DVI/H R2.02 Motherboard (GMA 950)
Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty with 2.6.31-rc4 kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.31-rc4/

 from https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa?field.name_filter=&field.status_filter=published&field.series_filter=jaunty
and Firefox-3.5

Thanks for the additional information.

I've just cleared the "NEEDINFO" field, (which you can do whenever you
provide information requested). Without clearing this field, many
developers won't even see the bug report in their searches.

These errors are quite bizarre and reminiscent of cairo bugs that I have introduced in the past. Oddly, I would have thought this was mostly likely a cache flushing issue (even though it doesn't appear to be like any other example I can think of), but the discrepancy between UXA and EXA suggests otherwise.

As all the rendering paths were actually shared between EXA and UXA, it is not even a magnified version of the extend-none bug.

Can you please verify whether this bug is still present in the current driver with the flushing fixes (and quite a few other bugs fixed)?

I cannot reproduce this on lucid with current xorg-edgers. i915 rendering quality has improved significantly with many long-standing bugs fixed over the last 6 months. There is a slim chance that one of those accidentally fixed this bug as well.

Nope, still not seeing this on my Ubuntu box. :(

Have you tried installing the current drivers from the xorg-edgers ppa, stock Ubuntu drivers are based on 2.9 and do not have many of the rendering fixes backported?

In particular, I *think* this is related to attempting to use a surface too large for the 3D pipeline, which I only fixed in the last few weeks.

Having experienced this on another website [bug 28497] I think I know what the cause is. If so, this should also have been fixed by:

commit b58a6a39c1568800938eb0e3ebc7664683b61200
Author: Chris Wilson <email address hidden>
Date: Wed Jun 23 23:56:44 2010 +0100

uxa: Fallback to pixman if source is out-of-bounds

If the source is outside the drawable, then CopyArea will fail to
initialise the source correctly. The simplest fix in this case is to
fallback to pixman to generate the source texture.

    Fixes:

Bug 28497 - Graphics corruption after opening a specific website
      https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28497

I've not been able to reproduce this instance, so I don't know if this patch is sufficient for this case as well.
