Bug Description

Binary package hint: kaffeine

Release: Ubuntu 8.10
Installed: 0.8.7-1ubuntu3~intrepid2

When being started, Kaffeine shows the following error message:

Loading of player part 'xine_part' failed.
xine_part.desktop not found in search path.

The file does exist in the supposedly right place:

locate xine_part.desktop
/usr/share/services/xine_part.desktop

Consequently, Kaffeine cannot play any videos, the xine backend cannot be configured (no menu entry), and all controls (which are described in said file, I believe) are missing from the player window.

I can confirm this.
With a fresh copy of intrepid installed it works, but when you upgrade to the latest packages (kde 4.2 and so) kaffeine gets broken :-( so it must be something included in the upgrades between the "base" intrepid install and the latest upgrades.
I've also upgraded to jaunty to see if was resolved, but the bug remains ...

This seems to affect digikam as well. Though both kipi-plugins and showfoto are installed, digikam does not detect any of them and their functionality is not available in digikam (which means you cannot look at any picture).

I had the same issue. I found that kded was not running. Starting kded before kaffeine fixed the problem. (KDE 3.5.10)

I've fixed this typing:
sudo cp /usr/share/services/xine_part.desktop /opt/kde3/share/services/

It seems that kaffeine can't find xine_part.desktop in the old kde3 place after upgrading to the new kdelibs4c2a which are compiled with /opt/kde3 as prefix.

That worked for me, thanks.
