Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

In terms of user-interaction and consistency, if it doesn't behave the same way, surely it shouldn't be there or it's behaviour should be changed.

Hi Jarlath, thanks for your bug report! Many other of the tools also cannot be dismissed via escape, such as: Authorizations, USB Startup Disk, Language Support, System Log, System Monitor, and Software Sources. Applications are not intended to dismiss themselves via escape; that behavior should really only happen for dialogs such as Hardware Drivers.

Am I misunderstanding something? What makes you say that it is the only tool which can't be dismissed via escape? From my testing it seems like most applications there do not behave this way.

Hi Mike, thanks for pointing out my mistake. The title should be System->Preferences. Only power management can't be dismissed with Escape there. Sorry about that.

I always go for the Escape key for user-prefs and this one gets me every time.

Okay I can confirm it then, thanks! There are some other popular non-default ones that don't obey; if someone agrees this is how all System->Preference windows should behave, we should file bugs for CCSM and Simple CCSM, and AWN Manager.

Also the "Bluetooth" and "PalmOS Devices" don't dismiss via escape, do you have those Jarlath?

Thanks Mike. I had them hidden previously, but I can confirm Bluetooth and PalmOS Devices also don't dismiss via escape.

I want to note that the standard key combination to close a window is Ctrl+W for multi-window applications, and Ctrl+Q for singular windows. Unfortunately gnome-control-center obeys neither (nor does gnome-power-prefs), so maybe that should be fixed too/first.

Thanks for the report Jarlath , It has been a long time without any comment or a duplicate in this bug report and It is possible that the bug has been fixed. May you please try to reproduce it with the latest Stable Release of Ubuntu the Natty Narwhal and add the respective comments to the report? You can learn how to get that release at http://www.ubuntu.com/download . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

Pedro, there is no System -> Preferences menu in Natty so I'm transposing the initial example to System Settings "Control Center". The situation is the same in Natty.

Most applications exit with ESC, for example; About Me, Appearance, Assistive Technology, Broadcast Accounts, Broadcast Preferences.

Yet some require ALT+F4, eg; Compiz Config Settings Manager, Email Settings, Launcher & Menus, Messaging and VOIP Accounts.

Note that the host application itself, "Control Center" (called "System Settings" in the menu) can also be dismissed by ESC.

If you like, I can make a complete list.
