Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome

Whenever I log in to my computer, the Gnome Panels, windows, icons, sounds, applications, and desktop icons fail to load! Only the desktop wallpaper and cursor are visible on the screen.
Why does it fail like that?

I've tried going into Failsafe GNOME to fix the problem,
but I can't find it. Even the System Log didn't say anything
regarding Gnome 2.22.3 failing.

Which version of Ubuntu is the occurring under?
Have you tried to enable desktop effects/compiz?

What steps would we need to take to replicate the problem from a clean install?

This is Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy. I've tried enabling and disabling certain startup scripts, but it still won't do anything!
Compiz Fusion isn't the problem because it works normally when enabled in Failsafe mode.
Anyway, all what I remember happening is that I clicked on the Clock applet on the Gnome panel and Gnome froze up. Then I rebooted and Gnome failed to load.

Thank you for your bug report. It isn't clear from your description whether you could log in to the failsafe session successfully. Can you confirm if this is the case?

Also, does this happen if you create a new user on your system?
