Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

Before the upgrade to Intrepid clicking away from the volume applet bar while it was visible caused it to be hidden, which was the fastest and easiest way to hide it after making a quick change to the volume. This is how everyone I've ever seen use the system tries to use this volume bar. Since the upgrade you must click the volume applet button. It appears, pressing ESC also does not hide the applet, although I don't remember if this worked before Intrepid.

This change is likely in the volume applet, since the brightness applet still disappears when you click somewhere else on the screen. In either case the two applets behave differently where they should behave somewhat similarly.
