Bug Description
Binary package hint: xserver-
Normally when you are editing text, you can select a word by pressing CTRL + SHIFT + left arrow or right arrow.
However, if you set the keyboard layout options to change keyboard layouts upon CTRL + SHIFT, this no longer works. The cursor moves by one word, but does not select the text.
To reproduce:
1. Run gedit, type in a word, and confirm that CTRL + SHIFT + left arrow selects the word (the expected behaviour).
2. Run System / Prefs / Keyboard, choose the Layouts tab, and ensure that at least two keyboard layouts are defined.
3. Click the Layout Options button and drop down 'Key(s) to change layout'. Tick the 'Ctrl + shift' checkbox and untick the other boxes.
4. Back in gedit, go to the end of the word you typed, ensure it isn't selected, and use CTRL + SHIFT + left arrow. This time, the word isn't selected although the cursor moves to the front of the word.
To confirm that this isn't simply a keyboard layout bug, I've repeated the above using 'Shift + Caps lock' instead of 'Ctrl + shift', and selection works fine in both keyboard layouts.

Hi rockorequin,
Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.
