Bug Description

When hibernating my sony VGN-BX196VP the laptop won't turn off after a lot of hard drive activity. I have to press the power button a few seconds to shut the computer down.

Resuming just gives a normal boot. This is with jaunty upgraded until 27 feb 2009.

Hibernation: writing all the data on disk works (a few warnings pop by, 'pcmcia_socket0 warning: DANGER: unable to remove socket power'). After a few seconds the num/scrl/caps flash once and the screen is black. However, the CPU-fan keeps blowing so the power isn't completely down. After pushing the power button 5 secs the computer powers down.
Waking up works, even after the manual shutdown. I tested this 3 times.
I also tested from tty1 with pm-hibernate, the same warnings flash by and the laptop won't shut down automatically.

So for hibernation the only buggy part seems the non-shutting down of the laptop after the hibernation process.

Suspend from X: the screen blanks out, but the laptop won't shut down (fans keep blowing)
Suspend from tty1: the screen is cleared and a blinking cursor is visible in the top left corner. Laptop won't shut down, keyboard is not responsive.
Suspend from tty1 with no_console_suspend kernel boot option: same as the one before (blinking cursor in top left corner). However, no extra messages visible, despite the no_console_suspend.
Booting after a hard shutdown (5sec press of powerbutton) of the laptop gives a normal boot.

So for suspend it seems like the same problem as with the hibernation: the non-shutting down of the laptop.

A normal shutdown (so no suspend/resume) works like it should (e.g. no manual 5sec power button push necessary)

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner.
There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test the current Ubuntu version (10.04). If you can test it, and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could upload updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #>, and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

Still happening with 10.04.

Tested with the kernel ppa (http://ppa.launchpad.net/kernel-ppa/ppa/ubuntu lucid main) with kernel

heinjan@casper:~$ uname -a
Linux casper 2.6.35-1-generic #1~lucid1-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jun 7 15:03:45 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
heinjan@casper:~$

This kernel gives the same symptoms.

Logs attached for non-successful hibernate/resume around 20:00. The screen turns black, hard disk is active. However, the computer won't shut down. After a hard shutdown of the machine the laptop doesn't resume, but starts as normal.

Brilliant heinjan! Thank you very much for the debugging information. Just one last thing that needs checked as per the Kernel Team Policy. Can you install and test the latest mainline kernel (ubuntu packages available and easy to install/remove). Full instructions for doing this are at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds - we can then upgrade this bug report to Triaged and get it passed on to be worked on by the appropriate developers. Thank you again for providing all the information so far :)
