From another website: http://www.amsn-project.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6343

Ah I see, the bug comes from libnss_wins.so.. I've never seen this library but it looks like some kind of samba library or something that ubuntu might have... so it's not amsn, it's not even tcl or tk.. it's actually the library that tries to resolve the messenger.hotmail.com hostname into an ip address...
nothing we can do here, I'm sure though that the ubuntu people will be able to help more than us!

libnss_wins.so is part of the winbind package, which description is :
Quote:
Description: Samba nameservice integration server
Samba is an implementation of the SMB/CIFS protocol for Unix systems,
providing support for cross-platform file and printer sharing with
Microsoft Windows, OS X, and other Unix systems. Samba can also function
as an NT4-style domain controller, and can integrate with both NT4 domains
and Active Directory realms as a member server.
.
This package provides winbindd, a daemon which integrates authentication
and directory service (user/group lookup) mechanisms from a Windows
domain on a Linux system. User/group lookups are configured via
/etc/nsswitch.conf, and authentication is integrated using the winbind
module for PAM.

Seems to be this problem: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tk8.5/+bug/200397

I enabled wins recently so it fits my symptoms.

Can confirm that removing wins resolves the crash.

Since this report have a long time without activity, could you check (if is possible) in latest version included in Karmic if this issue is still happening? Thanks in advance.
