Sorry for my poor english, i'm french.
I had the same problem and you must change the theme of Ubuntu.
Gnubg doesn't work with clearlock but it's ok with the human theme.

I only see the buttons and the board.
I can change de board apearance but cna change anymore. Everything are black.

I runnig this on Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10 with the last updates.

This seems to be fixed in the version of gnubg shipped with Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic. Can you confirm that the problem is gone?
