Bug Description
When inserting a video DVD, Gnome incorrectly reports that a DVD-ROM is present and it's impossible to play the disc.
If you then insert an audio CD and remove it, video DVDs are successfully detected and playable until shutdown.
This problem happens on every install, and occurs on every boot.
This problem existed in Breezy and still exists on the current Dapper build, and others have experienced it as mentioned on ubuntuforums.
My particular hardware:
hdc: PLEXTOR DVDR PX-716A, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
It's the only CD/DVD drive present.

I have a very similar problem. Breezy overwrites all writable video-DVD -discs when I try to eject the medium. I can initiate the playback but then the player freezes and the disc becomes corrupted. The disc name remains but the file structure disappears, the tracks remain on the disc as well as the video DVD format.
Non-writable video DVD:s are recognized and can be played (the one I have tried at least). I have burned the video DVD:s in Windows with Nero express both from image files and from video dvd file structure. I have not been able to successfully burn them in Breezy.
Windows says the disc is unreadable, Breezy shows an empty disc.
This happens also with Breezy Live CD and in all machines I have tried. If I insert an audio CD the problem disappears. No problems in Hoary.
DVD-drive is LG GSA-4166B
