Bug Description

In Dapper Flight 4, Kontact does not notice when KNewsticker is installed, these components are not listed in Settings -> Configure Kontact -> Select components although I've installed them.

OK, KNode is now integrated in Kontact, but not KNewsticker (I'd like to see RSS feeds in my summary).

According to the homepage of Kontact, the summary component is able to display any RDF news feed (http://www.kontact.org/components.php#summary). In Kubuntu, this is not possible, so this is a bug and not a wishlist.

Confirmed, knewsticker can't be selected as a component. As I understand, Kontact now uses Akregator for RSS feeds, but it can't show Akregator feeds in the summary view (see upstream bug).

In kde 3.5.4, knewsticker *can* be selected as a component, but it has no effect on the summary view.

I can't see knewsticker or akregator in components selection in kde 3.5.4, but I can make most appear as buttons by enabling them in .kde/share/config/kontactrc.

Unfortunately this doesn't include newsticker_plugin. Anyway, even if it would appear, without the components option, I wouldn't be able to configure it.

It's definitely not upstream-related, since it worked on my debian etch before kubuntu.

In Dapper release version too, Kontact didn't notice when I installed KNode at first, but it did after a reboot.

The problem is still present in Ubuntu Feisty.
However, I have found a workaround that works for me:
with Kontact inactive I have added to the file $HOME/.kde/config/kontact_summaryrc in the ActiveSummaries statement the string "kontact_newstickerplugin".
Therefore the statement now looks like that:

ActiveSummaries=kontact_korganizerplugin,kontact_kmailplugin,kontact_knotesplugin,kontact_specialdatesplugin,kontact_todoplugin,
kontact_weatherplugin,kontact_newstickerplugin

When I restart Kontact I find the proper option to activate and configure newsticker in the "Configure Summary View" option in the "Settings" menu.

I hope this helps

I suppose you meant the file $HOME/.kde/share/config/kontact_summaryrc, the path you gave does not exist on my out-of-the-box Gutsy installation. Additionally, the "ActiveSummaries" statement does not exist in my version of the file; there are, however, "LeftColumnSummaries" and "RightColumnSummaries" entries.

Anyway, I tried modifying the file as you suggested, but this gives no results (I also tried some variants in the config file). The plugin is no longer visible in the config dialog. So, I guess, the bug is not fixed for Kubuntu Gutsy.

Any hints on how to narrow down the cause would be appreciated, I'd really like to use this function and am willing to put some work into it.

Answer to Rastloser.
Sorry, the path you have given is just the right one.

I attach the the confguration file that works for me:
ActiveSummaries=kontact_korganizerplugin,kontact_kmailplugin,kontact_newstickerplugin,kontact_knotesplugin,kontact_specialdatesplugin,kontact_todoplugin,kontact_weatherplugin
LeftColumnSummaries=kontact_korganizerplugin,kontact_kmailplugin,kontact_todoplugin,kontact_specialdatesplugin,kontact_weatherplugin
RightColumnSummaries=kontact_newstickerplugin

I also suspect that something else, that I have installed, makes the stuff working, maybe the package dcoprss.
dcoprss description: RSS utilities for KDE
 kdenetwork-dcoprss is a RSS to DCOP bridge, allowing all DCOP aware
 applications to access RSS news feeds. There is also a few sample utilities
 provided.

I cannot provide any more help.

Well, thank you for mentioning dcoprss! That package (or rather, it being not installed) was the problem. After installing it, I was able to choose the newsticker from Kontact's settings.

In order to close this bug, then, I'd like to suggest the following:

a) include the package dcoprss in main and make the kontact package depend on it
b) alter the description of the dcoprss package so as to clearly state that it is required for RSS support on kontact's overview page. It is not clear at the moment that kontact, which embeds aKregator and hence *has* RSS support of a sort would need dcoprss.

Again, many thanks to you, madmax-77, I'm going to spread this information around should anyone ask on the forums.

I opened another bug asking for a depedency update on the kontact package to reflect the need for dcoprss.
