Ok issue resolved!
/etc/cups/printers.conf could not be replaced / deleted etc due to the "i" [immutable] flag.

To see these attributes run :
sudo cd /etc/cups/ & lsattr

To change the attribute of printers.conf [while in the /etc/cups/ directory] type : chattr -i printers.conf
You can now overwrite it, delete it , move it etc.
Installation of cups updates now runs smoothly and updates properly.

Cheers

Did you set the printers.conf file as immutable yourself and forgot about it then?
Can we close this bug?

Hi, I don't recall manually editing the printers.conf file. I actually had no problems on earlier updates.
Anyway, yes you can close it , since the resolution of the issue with "chattr" I have encountered no errors.
Thank you for your follow-up

Giorgos
