multiple file selection (for opening) does not work

[ubuntu 8.10 intrepid - tk8.5.3-1 - tk8.5.3-3]

Upon selecting multiple files in a file/open dialog box, tk_getOpenFile() returns a single file name string of the form:

"<path>/<file1> <file2> ... <fileN>"

I expect multiple file names of the form we all know so well.
