Bug Description
Noticed that on dapper, using alacarte menu editor that when an application is installed that has no icon or you wish to change the icon for that app in the menu list, alacarte opens with /usr/share/pixmaps, which is fine however, when using the browse button to find another folder with icons you may want to use, the icons in any other folders are greyd out and as a result, inaccessible. Not so with the older SMEG application.

Also seems related to #19454
Anyway, you need to select the correct folder, then hit enter in the path entry field of the icon selector. It will then show the icons in that folder, and you can choose the one you want.
More info on why it works that way in the bugreports mentioned above.
