Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-backports-modules-2.6.24-23-generic

Newer Intel 5100 chips seem to be incompatible with backports driver shipped with Hardy

One symptom I have seen is a failure to load iwlagn causes Out of Memory(OOM) kills at boot time
boot log attached below:

Hardware:
HP 6730b with Intel 5100 chipset.
Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy
Kernel 2.6.24-23-generic

login is possible afterwards, but networking is inoperable.

A possible relevant error from the log below:
iwlagn: Nic access not held from iwl5000_nic_config line 246
