Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Have you been able to test this in the latest daily build? And is this still a problem?

The latest build:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/20090220.3/jaunty-desktop-amd64.iso
(Boot from live USB via "Create a USB startup disk" in intrepid)
The DPI is still at 305 px. :-(

Here it is:

get-edid|parse-edid does not work and I found no suitable package available in jaunty
(sudo apt-get install read-edid didn't work: package too old ??)

X is reporting your DPI settings correctly. Probably your applications aren't designed to accommodate high dpi's.

My screen is a 32" fullHD flat TV

In Intrepid, everything was OK.
That problem considers the standart live-cd.
I am woundering, that the defaut dpi (ONLY at my desktop pc) is so high.
Nobody uses such high font sizes.

I have had this problem ever since I started using a TV as a display (DVI to HDMI cable from an nVidia 9600GT). Although I never checked the DPI reported by X in Intrepid, I did have the huge GDM, Etherape and Google Earth fonts. For most other apps, I can usually able to change application settings to compensate, but I would prefer to fix the setting globally or have it default to 96 DPI.

Great link, Bryce -- definitely on point for me, but my problem remains. A few comments:

My Display is a 40" 1080 television. 1920 (horizontal pixels) divided by 35 (horizontal inches) equals 54. X is reporting the same 305 (is that the max?). "xrandr --verbose" reports "0mm x 0mm" (I'll guess this is the root problem) but "get-edid" doesn't exist and the "read-edid" package "has no installation candidate" on Jaunty.

This seems needlessly complex - can't I just hard-code 96 DPI somewhere?

Also not digging the "wont fix" status -- this stuff "just works" on Windows. Or does this just me the bug will be fixed in a different module?

Here is a screenshot:

The panels and some fonts inside windows are ok, But the TitleBar font size and .. (see picture) are still too big.
