Bug Description

On Ubuntu 9.04 Beta 4 (Jaunty Jackalope), if I right-click on the sound icon (any of them), and click "mute", the sound volume remains just the same!

Hardware: HP Pavilion dv2056ea (laptop)

I can provide more info and do more tests if needed.

Thanks for your report. I cannot reproduce your issue, mute works for me. Make sure you are running up-to-date jaunty and have restarted your session. You should only have one volume icon.

Does the mute symbol appear when you select the mute option? Are you able to mute using other methods, such as with alsamixer or media keys? Does sound otherwise work normally for you?

I can confirm that on a freshly updated t400 2767-WC8 (from intrepid)
Clicking mute on the icon or in the dialog with the slider that shows up when you click the icon has no effect, as well as my hardware-mute button (which doesn't even effect the icon, which the other ways do). Going into Volume Control muting Master has no effect, muting pcm works, but causes a weird distortion (clicking sound) - I muted all other sliders to make sure it's not comming from a mic or so. Unmuting pcm doesn't work, voume is only updated when I drag the slider.
Also, setting master to zero (tested in Alsamixer as well) doesn't mute, but sets a very low volume (Maybe that should be put into a new bug).

I have made a new install of Ubuntu 9.04 beta (same hardware), and here is more info:
-Sound is disabled by default: I must go to alsamixer and enable "PCM-2"
-Mute button on laptop keyboard does not work (mute icon appears, but keyboard button only mutes "PCM", leaving "PCM-2" un-muted)
-Clicking the sound icon on the "gnome-panel" and clicking "mute" does not work (happens the exact same thing as above)
-Yes, I am able to mute ALL sound using alsamixer
-Yes, "sound itself" seems to be fine

I have same problem with auzentech x-mystique soundcard. I am using optical output (iec958). I am using jaunty, butt this problem has been around for me for at least a year now.

The volume sliders in volume control work perfectly. The little mute button right below them, the mute button on the tray applet, and the mute hotkey do nothing.

I have same problem with Asus eee 701. Fresh jaunty installation. The volume sliders in volume control work perfectly. Master mute button do nothing. Line-Out mute button works correctly. Selected device: HDA Intel (Alsa mixer)

affects: ubuntu → linux (Ubuntu)

I can also confirm this bug on a Thinkpad T400 2767-WC8 (as above): Muting the device with the laptop's mute button or even muting through the mute button of kmix, alsamixer, etc. does NOT work, but the volume sliders work perfectly.

The laptop is freshly installed with Jaunty. The strange thing is that muting with the mute button used to work, but only for a short(?) time (muting was not one of the functions I checked for working).

I also cannot find a "PCM-2" device in alsmixer. There's just "Master" and "PCM". I can reproduce the strange distortion when muting "PCM".

Hi SF007,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid.

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 329292

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I used Lucid for a while now and for me (Thinkpad T400) the bug seems to be fixed now: mute button works as it should.
