Bug Description

Binary package hint: casper

While running Jaunty off a flash device (Live environment)/Live CD/Harddisk the touchpad does not work. I tried dmesg and found this:

$ dmesg | grep Tou
[ 52.315920] Synaptics Touchpad, model: 1, fw: 5.9, id: 0x236eb3, caps: 0x904713/0x10008
[ 52.375802] input: SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad as /devices/platform/i8042/serio4/input/input7

so it's obviously found. It has never had any problems in ubuntu including intrepid. If you need more info, please let me know.

Edit: When I connect a usb mouse it works instantly, but the touchpaad remains dead. I have tried disabling and enabling the device several times with a dedicated button, to no avail

Hello,

The same thing is happening on my HP Compaq NC6000 laptop. The touchpad + 4 mouse buttons ( 2 from touch pad and 2 from nub mouse ). do not work. In my case the nub mouse works fine, but the keys associated with it ( which are on the same circuit as the touch pad ) do not work.

Running Hardy, the touch pad works most of the time, occassionally it stops working and has the same symptoms as above.

From startup of Hardy :
[ 52.260664] Synaptics Touchpad, model: 1, fw: 5.9, id: 0x1b6eb1, caps: 0xa84793/0x100000
[ 52.303946] input: SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad as /devices/platform/i8042/serio4/input/input6

Here is the Xorg.conf from Jaunty, looks like they are really pushing auto-detection at boot time.

I tried to take the lines from Xorg.conf from 8.04 that are related to my mouse and add them to Jaunty's xorg.conf. This did not make any difference, although Xorg.0.log logged a generic ps2 mouse instead of a Mac mouse.

As of the latest version of packets in Jaunty ( Februrary 25th 2009 : 2:52 ), the problem is still occuring.

The bug I am having is with a harddisk installed version of Jaunty ( from the latest alpha available, not nightly).

As of Jaunty Alpha 5, upgraded (update-manager -d) from Intrepid today, touchpad is working again. However, I don't know if that is related to me doing a upgrade instead of a clean install.

I ran apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade and it did not help. Perhaps I should try what you did.

I ran the upgrade command you said ( update-manager -d ) it did not resolve the issue, it seems that apt-get dist-upgrade does the same thing.
