Bug Description
After doing a fresh install of 5.10 on a laptop, I find myself unable to use the update manager, Synaptic, etc. The password dialog opens, but then nothing happens after I enter my password. As a test I tried to use sudo in the terminal to unmount a partition that was not in use. The terminal accepted the command and made no error reports, but the partition was still mounted afterwards.
As a sidenote: I had 5.10 working quite well on this machine earlier, but had tried to use one of the test flight cds for a Dapper Drake installation just before this.

Could you run gksu /usr/sbin/synaptic from the command line and see whether it prints anything interesting after you enter your password?
