Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome

ubuntu hardy heron gnome often hangs partially. people at office could not click the main menu (Application, System, Places, and such at taskbar), though the system could response to "alt tab" to switch task and save them jsut in case. The way to work around this problem is to do a hard force reboot through the reset button which is so annoying! :(

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please attach your X server configuration file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the "Attachment:" box below. Could you please also try to run without any /etc/X11/xorg.conf and let Xorg autodetect your display and video card? Please also attach the /var/log/Xorg.0.log from this attempt. Thanks in advance.

after 8 hours of working hours, the system won't shutdown again. funny thing, if the uptime is small, the system will reboot or poweroff just fine.

here's the 1st machine conf and log.

Do you have Desktop Effects (compiz) enabled on the systems?

nope, i always disable desktop effects since it brings more performance and less bug.

i found a way to fix this problem with disable the apm feature in kernel. i added the "noapm" option in /boot/grub/menu.lst to the grub defoptions and then do update-grub. voila, now the hang issues were gone for couple of days until current.

it's been awhile that the kernel boot option "noapm" worked fine, until last couple days, the gnome panel hangs again, and this time lots of machines hangs after 8 hours of usage (gambas 1, openoffice 2.4, firefox 3.0.9, pidgin), though the system was booted with noapm option in the grub menu.lst.

it's just getting worse each update. :( anyone having the same problems??

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner.
There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test the current Ubuntu development version (10.10). If you can test it, and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could upload updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #>, and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.
