I must precize that this bug occurs only when you have just installed Firefox. The downloads folder is then set to the Gnome Desktop.

Moreover, if you want to change the downloads folder, you have to restart firefox so as the modifications take effect.

Yes after today's update, downloads are going /tmp even though it says on the Download Manager that they are being saved to /Downloads (where I save all my downloads).

I also wanted to add the ark is automatically opened as well at the end of the download.

Please read: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2006-February/015900.html

If you use a development release, it's highly recommended to read the ubuntu-devel list...

reopening; the current implementation is highly dangerous. See my reply on ubuntu-devel and mh21' demo in bug 33038.

BTW, the bug title does not really suggest that this is a dup of 33038, since it talks about a different effect.

That's why that bug is still open ;)

For the record: I agree 500% - this is worse than internet explorer.

Originally this bug report did not refer to the automatic opening of external content, it got hijacked. So it's not a duplicate of bug 33038.

When downloading files, firefox puts them to /tmp, instead of the Desktop. This happens for files where you choose "open" instead of "save as".

One more reason this should be changed: privacy - any user on the system can see what files any other user has downloaded. The content cannot be viewed but the filename can be viewed.

It should at least be possible to configure firefox to save the files somewhere else.

Perhaps the default could be changed to /tmp/{randomness}/filename and the /tmp/{randomness} directory could be made unreadable to others.

I believe it should be reopened, for Ubuntu 11.10, and supporting #10 in this bug:
